What to Know

Get permit, schedule inspection

  • When purchasing your permit, you will need to schedule a day you would like your inspection to take place. If your project is not at a stage to schedule an inspection, call the Interactive Voice Messaging System with your permit number when the project is ready for inspection.

  • Inspection times are generally between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Inspectors do not provide specific times, but can provide a three hour window in the morning or afternoon. Speak directly with your inspector about the possibility of scheduling between the hours of 7:30 and 8:30 a.m.

  • Your permit will expire one year after the date of purchase or date of the last inspection, whichever is later.

  • When your work is ready for inspection, you must call the Interactive Voice Messaging System to schedule your appointment. Appointments scheduled prior to 1 p.m. will be be given to the inspector for the following work day. However, an inspector's workload may prevent a next-day inspection. We are able to inspect 90 percent of the requests the next business day. Inspections rarely extend beyond the second business day.

  • We assign inspectors geographically. Review the Inspection Areas Map for contact information.

  • It is your responsibility to ensure that the inspector has access to inspect the work.
  • The inspector will not enter your home without an adult (minimum age of 18) present.
  • If you choose, you can leave a key for access to an unoccupied house or non-residential building. You can inform the inspector where a key is located on the premises by including this information on the permit or by speaking to the inspector prior to the day of the inspection. The inspector will not enter a house with furnishings or personal property inside even if you leave a key.
  • You may be assessed a trip fee if appropriate access described above is not provided for the inspector to complete the inspection.

  • Appointments must be cancelled by 8:30 a.m. the day of the inspection. You may be assessed a trip fee if the inspector arrives at your job site and you have not cancelled in a timely manner.
