Tacoma Power’s four hydroelectric projects have licenses issued by the federal government. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), created by the Federal Power Act, issues each unique license and oversees its operation.

About hydropower licensing

Many agencies, organizations and other stakeholders are also an important part of the licensing process.

Along with the generation of clean, renewable electricity, Tacoma Power provides many benefits with its hydro projects. Our licenses contain provisions for:

  • Fisheries programs, including hatcheries and the protection of natural-origin fish and their habitat
  • Wildlife programs, including habitat protection and enhancement
  • Campgrounds, day-use areas and other recreational opportunities near our reservoirs
  • Cultural resource protection and education

Our commitment to operating our hydroelectric facilities safely and responsibly is as strong as ever.
