Results of annual duct sealing and heat pump installations

Every January and July, a team of quality assurance inspectors from Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) inspects heat pump and duct sealing projects throughout the region that were completed by contractors that are certified by the agency’s Performance Tested Comfort Systems (PTCS) program. The latest results are in! 22 Tacoma Power projects were inspected, and 15 passed on the first inspection.

Tips for you
Learn from others! Here are the most common installation issues that required corrections:

Central Heat Pumps
  • Set auxiliary temperature setting to 35 degrees or below
  • Activate compressor lockout (low ambient lockout LAL) to 5 degrees or less
  • Confirm external static pressure and airflow meet program specs
Duct Sealing

Insufficient mastic applied. Bare metal connections should not be seen, and mastic should be as thick as a nickel.

Next round of inspections
BPA inspectors will notify contractors randomly selected for upcoming project inspections in the first quarter of 2020.
