Water heaters are the second highest source of energy usage in the home.  
Heat pump water heaters are designed to be energy efficient and good for the planet. By reducing electricity use, a heat pump water heater has a direct effect on reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Save energy – energy efficient heat pump water heaters use less than half the energy of a standard electric storage water heater 
  • Save money – compared to a standard electric water heater, a heat pump water heater uses 60% less energy

Tacoma Power offers property owners a $500 rebate towards the purchase and installation of a qualifying Tier 3, heat pump water heater in an owner-occupied home or rental property (up to 4 units).

Limitations: One rebate per HPWH (maximum of 2 rebates per home/living unit) 


Additional requirements for DIY projects/installations:

  • Rebate applies only to material costs, not labor
  • Rebate cannot exceed the cost of materials
  • Copies of receipt or invoice must be submitted

Not Eligible:

  • Rental properties with 5 or more units in a building

Additional rebates may also be available from product manufacturers. Talk to your contractor about your options.

Application Processing Time

It takes approximately four to six weeks to process applications. 

If using a contractor for the installation, contact a Tacoma Power participating contractor to schedule a free estimate. They can also evaluate your home to see if there are any other efficiency programs that would meet your needs.



Complete the appropriate application:



Review the appropriate required documents checklist to ensure you have everything you need to submit the application.

  • Rental Property Documents Checklist (up to 4 units)

Submitting your application

There are several ways to submit your application (listed below):

  • Contractor - your contractor may offer to submit the application directly to Tacoma Power
  • Email - submit the application along with all required documentation to
