Our water originates from diverse sources, such as the Green River and our prolific groundwater supply. The status of our water supply depends on many factors, including snowpack, rainfall, Green River flows, reservoir levels, and daily water consumption. Each year, our team of experts monitor the chemistry of the drinking water and collect samples from our water sources, treatment plants, and the distribution system. We are fortunate to have surface water and groundwater for operational flexibility and growth. The Green River Municipal Watershed has been Tacoma Water’s primary water supply since 1913. The watershed is located in the Cascade Mountains and covers about 148,000 acres of forestland. We also operate seven wells within the watershed and own 24 wells in and around Tacoma that help contribute to our water supply. Explore our water sources.
