Tree Coupon Program
Planting the right tree in the right place can provide shade, help reduce summer cooling costs, and support a healthier tree canopy.
Tacoma Power customers and Pierce County residents may be eligible to request a coupon to help offset up to $40 per tree for up to three trees, for a maximum of $120. You can use coupons at participating nurseries and garden centers.
Tree Coupons are available each year from October 1 through March 15 and must be redeemed by March 31.

Tree CouponWhy plant a tree?
Well-placed trees can provide shade, reduce summer cooling costs, improve air quality, reduce stormwater runoff, and add beauty to your yard.
Tacoma Power partners with the City of Tacoma Department of Environmental Services – Urban Forestry Program and Pierce County Surface Water Management to help grow our community’s tree canopy. The City of Tacoma aims to reach 30% tree canopy coverage by 2030, and planting the right tree in the right place can support that effort.
Before your plant
-
Think about how large your tree will be when fully grown and make sure it has enough space away from your home, roof, foundation, and other structures.
If you are planting near power lines, choose a tree that will remain small at maturity and avoid planting medium or large trees underneath or too close to overhead power lines.
-
For energy savings:
- Plant deciduous trees on the southwest or southeast side of your home for summer shade and winter sunlight.
- Plant evergreen trees where they can help block winter winds.
-
Call 811 before planting to avoid hitting underground utility lines.
-
New trees need regular watering while their roots become established. We recommend watering new trees from April through October for the first three years.
