budget billing

If you are a residential customer who has had an account with Tacoma Public Utilities for at least 1 year, you can sign up for Budget Billing.  Budget Billing allows you to pay the same set amount each month to make budgeting for utilities easier.

How Budget Billing works:

First, we need to determine what your average water and power use is over the course of a year.  That is calculated as follows:

  • If you are a Tacoma Power customer, we take all of your power bills for the past 12 months, add them together then divide by 11 and round to the nearest whole dollar (this is how we calculate your “average power usage”)
  • If you are a Tacoma Water customer, we take all of of your water bills for the past 12 months, add them together then divide by 11 and round to the nearest whole dollar (“average water use”)
  • City of Tacoma residents only – fixed monthly charges for solid waste, surface water and wastewater utility services, if applicable.

On the 12th month (the anniversary of your plan start date), we'll recalculate your Budget Billing amount for the next 12 months using the same process. Any debits or credits from the previous Budget Bill term is divided by 12 and calculated into the next year's budget amount.
