The Green River Watershed Management Plan and Wellhead Protection Program help Tacoma Water aggressively protect our community’s water supply and enables the utility to provide more than 300,000 customers with safe and reliable water. Most of Tacoma Water’s supply comes from the Green River in Southeast King County. The Green River Watershed is a 231-square-mile forested area, which serves as a collection point for melting snow and seasonal rainfall in an uninhabited area of the Cascade Mountains between Chinook and Snoqualmie passes. Tacoma Water owns approximately 10 percent of the watershed, including primary and secondary areas along the river.

The Green River Watershed Management Plan describes the watershed hydrology, geography, and critical areas; details landowners and written agreements with landowners; identifies watershed characteristics and activities that may have an adverse effect on source water quality; summarizes monitoring and control of watershed activities; and discusses potential future improvements in watershed control. The Green River Watershed Management Plan is Volume II of the 2006 Comprehensive Water System Plan Update.
