• Hire a landscape manager or service experienced in water-wise landscaping concepts.
  • Limit areas that require a large amount of water, such as unused turfgrass areas.
  • Use native or regionally-adapted plants when possible.
  • Use mulch in all planting beds and adjust water applications accordingly.
  • Use and regularly manage centralized automatic irrigation systems. Use weather-based irrigation controllers or moisture sensors when possible.
  • Operate sprinkler systems before sunrise and after sunset, and avoid irrigating during windy or rainy weather.
  • Conduct sprinkler system tune-ups with system start-up (level, unplug, and replace nozzles; adjust spray patterns, match precipitation rates), regular system inspections during the watering season (runoff & misdirected spray; broken, block, elevated, depressed, or tilted heads; broken pipes; low head drainage), and properly shut down and drain systems at the end of the year.
  • When possible, use drip irrigation or sprinkler heads with lower precipitation rates and higher distribution uniformity.
  • Install automatic shut-off nozzles on all hoses.
