The South Tacoma Groundwater Protection District was established in 1988 to help protect some of our most important wells. Businesses in the area are subject to special regulations because of the number of wells in the area and because the gravel and sand found just below the surface in much of South Tacoma allow water and hazardous chemicals, if present, to move quickly through the ground down to groundwater.
