Tacoma Rail is a 100 percent self-supported railroad. It is one of three operating divisions of Tacoma Public Utilities (the other two are Tacoma Power and Tacoma Water).
Tacoma Rail is municipally owned but is different from other City departments in two significant ways. First, it is governed by the Public Utility Board, a non-salaried five-member board that is appointed by the City Council. Second, Tacoma Rail is a taxpayer, paying eight percent of its gross earnings to the City's General Fund and 1.5 percent to the State of Washington.
Tacoma Rail's more than 95 employees provide service 24 hours a day, seven days a week to handle all of the responsibilities of any common carrier railroad, including track inspection and maintenance, locomotive maintenance, customer service and administration.
