Tacoma Power engineered and built Alder and LaGrande dams with a commitment to strength and safety.
Our safety program begins with stringent monitoring. Special monitoring equipment installed in and near the dams tracks any changes or movement. Each dam is inspected every weekday by trained, on-site hydroelectric employees. On weekends and holidays, security employees inspect the dams daily for any signs of stress or leakage.
Additional in-depth mechanical, electrical and facility inspections occur weekly, monthly or semi-annually. Our dam safety engineers review the tests and readings.
Each year the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) conducts inspections of the dams with our engineers and reviews dam safety records. In addition, independent engineering specialists conduct a thorough year-long examination every five years that includes a review of structural, hydraulic and geotechnical studies of the dams.
Assuring our dams’ safety is one of Tacoma Power's highest priorities. The Nisqually River Project dams continuously demonstrate high performance in meeting FERC's dam safety requirements.
