This information is designed to help you understand how our inspection process works and what you can expect after you purchase your permit.

Scheduling

  • When purchasing your permit, indicate whether the project is ready for inspection. If you have not indicated your project is ready for inspection, we will hold the permit until you request an inspection.

  • Your permit will expire one year after the date of purchase or date of the last inspection, whichever is later.

  • When your work is ready for inspection, you must call the Interactive Voice Messaging System (IVR). If you are calling us to book out the inspection it will be given to the inspector for the following work day if called in prior to 1 p.m. The inspector will attempt to inspect your project the next business day. However, workload levels may prevent a next-day inspection. Our experience is that we are able to inspect 90 percent of the requests the next business day; the inspection rarely extends beyond the second business day.

  • Inspection times are generally between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Specific times for inspections are not provided by our office. Four hour blocks of time may be designated by your inspector in an a.m. or p.m. format. Speak directly with your inspector regarding scheduling between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday.

Access

  • It is your responsibility to ensure that the inspector has access to inspect the work.

  • The inspector will not enter your home without an adult (minimum age of 18) present.

  • If you choose, you can leave a key for access to an unoccupied house or non-residential building. The inspector will not enter a house with furnishings or personal property inside even if you leave a key. You can inform the inspector where a key is located on the premises by including this information on the permit or by speaking to the inspector prior to the day of the inspection.

  • You might be assessed a fee if appropriate access described above is not provided for the inspector to complete the work.

Cancellations

  • To cancel an inspection for any reason, you must do so no later than 8:30 a.m. the day of the inspection. You might be assessed a trip fee if the inspector arrives at your job site and you have not called to cancel the inspection in a timely manner.

Service Hook-Ups

  • If you need power connection or reconnection, you must pay your power connection fee in addition to the permit fee prior to inspections being performed.
  • If your service has not been connected by the seventh day, after all fees have been paid and your service has been approved, please call our meter and service crew department at (253) 502-8460.
