Fish & Wildlife Programs

Taking care of our fish and wildlife is an important priority for us.

In addition to providing a renewable source of electricity, Tacoma Power’s four hydroelectric projects support major fish and wildlife programs.

Fish programs
As part of our responsibility for operating hydroelectric dams, Tacoma Power protects fish habitat and help fish around our dams. We own two fish hatcheries as part of the Cowlitz River Project and are working towards restoring salmon and steelhead populations while producing and planting fish for harvest.

Wildlife programs
Thousands of acres of wildlife land are carefully managed to provide quality wildlife habitat. Some of these wildlife areas are managed by Tacoma Power’s natural resources management team, while others are managed by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The Cowlitz Wildlife Area encompasses 14,000 acres dedicated to wildlife habitat. Tacoma Power manages 3,500 acres of wildlife land in the Nisqually River Project area.
