Use the following guidelines to ensure safe temperatures for water use in your home:
- Set your water heater to no higher than 120 degrees or the minimum setting on the water heater. Tap water at 156 degrees can cause third-degree burns to adult skin in just one second.
- Water temperature for a baby's bath should be between 90 and 100 degrees. To check the temperature, put your elbow in the water. If you can't tell whether it's warm or cold, it's the right temperature.
- Keep the temperature of the water in a spa or hot tub at 104 degrees or less. High temperatures can cause drowsiness, which can lead to unconsciousness and drowning. Raised body temperature can also lead to stroke and death. Pregnant women and young children should not use a spa or hot tub before consulting with a physician.
