2009 Tacoma Water Haiku Contest Winners

From food production and preparation, to cleaning, electricity generation, health care and industry, and even our own being, water is the most important natural resource affecting our daily lives. Water’s many uses gives us equally as many reasons to use our precious resource wisely—without water life could not exist.

In an effort to get kids thinking about the importance of water, we continue to present a Water Haiku Writing Contest to 5th grade students encouraging them to think about what water means to them and our community. Students participating in our contest must write a water haiku. A haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. A haiku uses three lines: the first line consists of five syllables; the second line has seven syllables and the third line has five syllables. Note: The last word in each line does not need to rhyme with the other last words, as some poems do. It is a simple, yet very beautiful expression of words.

Examples

Rain falls on my head. Fresh, clean and so pure

It is telling me something. Water makes my life complete.

Get an umbrella. Clearly it’s my friend

Water Haikus

Water in Swan Creek
Flowing to the noisy winds
Whispering water

--Kylie Waddill

The antic waves flow,
As the moonlight floods the waves,
A broad and calm sea.

--Tre Crittendon

In streams and oceans
Needed by all the living things
Gone? Don’t let it be.

--Amiya Webster

Water sustains life
Reusable forever
With the world’s support

--Vito LaPinta

The deep blue sea groans
As the sharks long for fresh food
“Come here” the shark says.

--Trevor Hudson
