When cold weather hits, people reach for the thermostat and electric bills go up accordingly. Tacoma Power can help its customers reduce that financial hit by providing rebates, free services and education.

Some ways for customers to save include:

· Customers receive $30 when they recycle their old, working refrigerator or freezer through our recycling program, which includes free pick-up. They can also save up to $140 a year just by unplugging the old unit.

· Customers with electrically heated homes can get a free home energy check to determine whether their home leaks warm air – and what to do about it if it does. We offer free insulation and duct sealing to those who qualify, and also offer zero-interest loans for insulation, duct sealing and windows. Adding new insulation, duct sealing and energy-efficient windows can cut a heating bill by 25 percent.

· Customers can cut their power bills by using compact fluorescent light bulbs, which can use up to 75 percent less energy than traditional bulbs and last 10 times longer, saving about $30 in electricity costs over each bulb’s lifetime.

Bill payment assistance is also available to qualifying customers.
