Free wood chips available

Jan. 4, 2007

Tacoma Power is offering its customers free wood chips — delivered. The wood chips are produced from tree trimming activities along power lines.

The wood chips will be delivered to customers who request them when tree crews are working in their area. Customers requesting chips who are not in the immediate trimming area will be placed on an area waiting list and chips will be delivered when time permits.

Tacoma Power will deliver only full loads of four to six cubic yards per load. The wood chips consist of multiple tree species, are irregular in shape and color, and can include leaves, some twigs and rakings. These chips are suitable for pathways but are not recommended for play areas.

Tacoma Power arborist Hal Porter said that delivering wood chips to customers is an opportunity to recycle the material and is less expensive than taking them to landfills.

All chips delivered must be unloaded on the owner’s property; drivers cannot unload chips on sidewalks or other public easements. For more information, call Tacoma Power at (253) 502-8729. Callers should leave their name, address and phone number so Tacoma Power can make contact before delivery.
