Washington state has added a new set of energy-efficient appliances that qualify for the Cash for Appliances program. Tacoma Power customers can get even bigger rebates on some of those items.
Dishwashers
- $75 Cash for Appliances rebate
- Efficient dishwashers use half the water that older, standard models use
Ductless heat pumps
- $750 Cash for Appliances rebate
- They can cut heating bills by 25 to 50 percent in electrically heated homes
Electric heat pump water heaters
- $250 Cash for Appliances rebate
- They’re up to twice as efficient as conventional electric water heaters
Clothes washers: $250 total rebate
- $150 rebate from Cash for Appliances (rebate increased by $50 in June and will automatically be paid to those who already applied for the initial rebate of $100)
- Up to $100 rebate from Tacoma Power
- Efficient clothes washers use about 30 percent less energy and 50 percent less water than older, standard units
Refrigerators: $105 total rebate
- $75 rebate from Cash for Appliances for buying a new fridge and recycling the old one
- $30 and free haul away from Tacoma Power for recycling an old fridge
- People must recycle their old fridge and buy a new one to get the entire rebate amount
- Newer, more efficient fridges can use up to four times less energy than older models
State and utility rebates apply only to qualifying Energy Star-rated models. The state portion of the rebate is available on qualifying appliances until Dec. 31, 2011, or until funds run out.

Tacoma Power customers can call 1-877-577-0510 or visit KnowYourPower.com/fridge to have their old refrigerator recycled.
